NCAA Football Rule Change on Punt Formations is Short-Sighted and Cowardly
For the 2026 season onward (until innovative minds lead the way someday), the NCAA Football Rules Committee outlawed innovative formations and a huge amount of potential creative play concepts during Punting situations, with their new draconian restrictions regarding the alignment of players in a punt formation AND their new jersey numbering requirements.
To be clear, football coaches voted 61 to 1 AGAINST this moronic rule change because it will harshly stifle innovative ideas and exciting creativity.
*Hopefully, some NCAA Offensive Coordinators and Special Teams Coordinators will meet with their Head Coach and convince him to implement a Check With Me (CWM) system on 4th downs while enabling their Quarterback to align in the shotgun formation. That way, the QB can survey the defense in a punting-type situation, and if the QB does not like the 4th down play options during that scenario, then he can make a call, and take a couple steps back into a deeper shotgun set, and punt the football utilizing a Quick Kick punt.
