Building a More Perfect Union Together

As the month of June ends, hundreds of millions of Americans from all walks of life, of every race and belief will begin to humbly reflect, cherish and then celebrate the founding of our great nation as we near the July 4th holiday. 

(Obviously, it shall be a much more muted honoring due to COVID-19).

Mutually, we appreciate and respect the creation of the United States of America. And in doing so, we remember that our amazing country is a constant work in progress. America was founded with the keen understanding that it was always going to be improved upon by its future citizenry. Never perfect but forever becoming even better. 

Freedom for all Americans is the very essence of equality, for every race and ethnicity. 

America provides and guarantees that keystone God-given right for each American.

Even though America is the most dynamic, freedom-loving country ever created for millions of people, it is our responsibility to peacefully work together to improve and build "a more perfect union" for all Americans. 

We are one Nation, under God with liberty and justice for all.

Imagine for a moment, being a man or woman from any other part of the world, and then finally arriving in America and witnessing the breathtaking Statue of Liberty for the first time. Lady Liberty is stunning to behold for her innate beauty and inherent message of freedom for every American.

Respectfully, America is unlike anywhere else on earth, where any person can start their life with absolutely nothing and work hard to achieve their dreams. Literally, anyone can build a successful life for themselves and their family. 

America provides limitless opportunity for any person willing to earn it. Often times, a person's own manifested life in America becomes the stuff of dreams for others to admire, respect and learn from.

Any person that earnestly builds their own quality life becomes the personification of "Americana" through their undying efforts, struggles, failures and eventual success. 

America began as, "the great experiment" guided by the brilliant Charters of Freedom. 

The Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the Constitution form the remarkable foundation of our always-improving union for all Americans to benefit from. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is ingrained in our national character; it's who we are, and why we choose to live our lives in the United State of America. 

Since America declared its independence from all tyranny on July 4th, 1776 and up through this moment in time, America has served as the flashing beacon of liberty. Simply put, liberty for all is the core principal and main reason so many people want to live in America...freedom for all.

America is not perfect, and it never will be. Americans have struggled and worked together to make incredible changes and correct our nation's previous mistakes. 

And moving forward, we owe it to our past, present, and future Americans to make things even better for us all. America is the most vivid shining example of an amazing country that cares for and supports all of its citizens. All people, coming from anywhere in the world that simply want the opportunity to build a great life for themselves and their family. 

Humble and proud human beings that love and respect each other. People that are willing to work peacefully together with their fellow Americans to keep building a more perfect union. 

Coach Tom Flores Belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame

UPDATED:   February 8th, 2021...Congratulations to Tom Flores finally being chosen to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame!

Former Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders Head Coach, Tom Flores should be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

As a lifelong fan of the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, and now the Las Vegas Raiders, I have written previously about some of their great players, Quarterback, Ken Stabler and Wide Receiver, Cliff Branch that belonged in the HOF (posthumously). Fortunately, Stabler has since been enshrined into the HOF, but inexplicably, Branch has not been included. Hopefully, that will change very soon for Branch because he was an elite receiver with amazing talent that terrified opposing defensive backs for many years.

However, the remarkably humble and successful Coach Tom Flores has not yet been inducted into the HOF, and he deserves to be put into the hall, now. 

As Head Coach of the Raiders for nine-seasons, Flores won two Super Bowls in dominant fashion over the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins, respectfully. Flores led the Raiders to those world championships with Jim Plunkett at QB, a once-brilliant quarterback that many other football experts had written off as over the hill and/or washed up. 

Coach Flores proved them all wrong, and he was also a pioneer, as one of the few minority coaches guiding a professional football team in the NFL.

Some pundits have incorrectly claimed that Flores was not really in charge of the Raiders, and that he was the beneficiary of inheriting a bevy of talented players from his predecessor, the legendary coach John Madden, and/or that Raiders owner, Al Davis was actually calling the shots. 

That is not correct. 

In fact, prior to becoming head coach of the Raiders, Flores served as an assistant coach on the Raiders staff for seven-years. 

The 53-losses incurred by the Raiders under Flores' watch are forever attached to his record, but so are the more impressive 83-victories, including those two Super Bowl wins. 

Nine-seasons as head coach of the Raiders, and two Super Bowl wins. 

It's time to honor Tom Flores for his accomplishments as the once great leader of the Raiders. 

Induct Tom Flores into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he deserves it without question.

We can bolster our fellow Americans in-need by giving them our best effort, and by peacefully demonstrating our mutual support during even the most difficult of circumstances.

Unity in Sports Can Help Lead the Way

Growing up in the San Francisco bay area, it's been my honor to have developed excellent friendships with a variety of people from a multitude of ethnic backgrounds and beliefs. Our family has expanded into new cultures and I've been able to work closely with an amazing group of diverse colleagues & players at every level of football for almost thirty-years.   

Best of all, even though each of us has our own flaws, we respect and love each other, and we value one another dearly. We come from a beautiful mix of backgrounds of every race and a wide variety of thoughts and ideas. We cherish each other's uniqueness. 

We care about one another as human beings. We are equal in every regard.

As a supporter of every hardworking law enforcement officer that risks his or her life daily to help protect and serve each American citizen of every race around the nation, it has been heartbreaking to see the inexplicable deaths of some innocent African-Americans that were caused by a very small number of law enforcement officers that are simply not justifiable at all.

This is not about politics, rather it's about the respect for All Humanity and eliminating any type of injustice in its purest form.

Even though the majority of law enforcement officers conduct their jobs with total respect for every American of every race, there is a very small number of officers that have taken fatal action against some innocent black Americans that resulted in their very tragic deaths.

Without a doubt, those law enforcement officers that are found guilty must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.



However, the vast number of officers that hold true and remain caring of all individuals must be treated with the great respect they deserve.

Additionally, and has been the case throughout much of America's modern sports history, properly demonstrating a peaceful and strong show of unity in the the world of sports can help lead the way out of this terrible period.



Together in sports, we can further develop an even brighter and more prosperous and loving future for all Americans.

For those of us in the sports world that have grown up in America supporting and celebrating the invigorating pursuit of life, liberty and happiness for each American of every race, we need to bond together peacefully now and forevermore.

Respect, love and peace through strength of unity can cement our bonds better than ever before.

America needs us...

There is No Elevator to Success, You Have to Take the Stairs.

Not too long ago, I stepped into an elevator and reached to push the button to register my ride to my designated floor. I was pleasantly surprised upon reading the humorous and ironic quote contained within the placard mounted on the wall...

"There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs."

That brilliant quote by world-renowned motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar, was perfect.



When going after your dreams and goals in life, it's not easy to succeed without a great deal of struggle throughout the process. You can make progress and ascend, but then some type of road block or major obstacle gets in your way. You pause or stumble, and maybe tumble backwards a bit, and then regroup with your allies and supporters, before continuing onward in your upward climb.

Life moves ahead and you try even harder, all the while knowing you are Not guaranteed a successful outcome. However, your hopes and deep belief in yourself and your proven teammates provides the fuel for your drive into an unpredictable future.

When you coach in any sport long enough, you get the opportunity to work alongside some great coaches, mentors, teachers, leaders, regardless of the level you're at, youth, high school, college or pro.

In fact, when looking and learning about another person's remarkable efforts in pursuit of their own wonderful achievements, the mini-wins and tribulations during their trek to attain a set of goals is often stunning, gut-wrenching and amazing.

The great game of Football is the ultimate team game. Football teaches us valuable lessons about planning, hard work, perseverance, making adjustments, and best of all, being unselfish in the quest to win for your team.

Zig Ziglar's wise quote about, "taking the stairs" can serve as a great reminder for anybody willing to listen and learn while pursuing their dreams along the way.

We Have So Much to be Thankful For...

Each year on JULY 4th, our great country and its amazing people of every ethnicity, religion, belief and gender join together to celebrate our nation's birthday and its incredibly valuable and important position in this world.

As with all outstanding countries, America is filled with excellent people possessing remarkable traits. America is the most generous and prosperous country in the world, and the USA will forever be a dynamic work in progress striving to improve upon itself every day of its fascinating and historic life.



America provides unlimited opportunity for all people able and willing to work hard to achieve their hopes and dreams. America proudly opens its arms of Freedom and Opportunity for everyone willing to give their best effort.



Within the USA, there are thousands of wonderful and diverse cities and regions, supported by people taking part in their ongoing traditions while also developing new ones for current and future generations to enjoy.

The great City of Oakland, CA, the entire East Bay, and greater SF Bay Area is a very special place to live. It's a lovely spot that's brimming with incredibly bright and beautiful people born and raised locally, and from all over the world.



Our region is blessed with the best weather, a beautiful bay, gorgeous beaches touching the Pacific Ocean, wonderful lakes, valleys and mountains, outstanding restaurants, outdoor recreation choices galore and a multitude of entertainment options, all bolstered by thousands of career-making jobs and innovative opportunities.

We have much to be thankful for each and every day.

We Shared A Valuable Experience Together

The old saying goes, "People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime."

In the football coaching fraternity, which is relatively small, that mantra rings true.

At each stop an experienced football coach encounters during his career, it's the good people = the players, coaches and administrators that one tends to remember the most.

Respectfully, during our two-years of diligently and completely rebuilding the culture of the entire football program at Arroyo from the ground up, my coaching staff and I enjoyed some difficult and very good times together.



The Arroyo football program is in excellent hands with Coach Mikel Dace (pictured 2nd from Right) now assuming command, with his very capable and innovative staff alongside him. They truly care about the players and the overall health of the football program.

Regarding the outstanding group of football coaches at Arroyo, I am very proud to call them my friends, not only are they great coaches, but they are even better men, both on and off the field.

I wish the Arroyo Football players, coaches, administrators and fans a great deal of exciting success in the years ahead.

Kyler Murray is About to Change Professional Football Forever

Respectfully, to the naysayers about the inability of Oklahoma Quarterback and future Pro Football Star, Kyler Murray to Not be able to have a successful career in the NFL because he is Not tall enough to play QB in the NFL, they are incorrect.

It is precisely due to the unique combination of Kyler Murray's great leadership style, top intelligence, and his dynamic athletic and play-making abilities that will make it very possible for Murray to not only have a successful QB career in the NFL, but he will also become the beacon of change at the Quarterback position in the NFL. Murray's rise will signify a cleansing of some outdated thoughts about the mandated physical stature required to win at the QB spot in the NFL, while additionally endorsing the innovative offenses populating the high school and collegiate ranks nationwide, and beginning to seep into the NFL, thereby finally kicking-in the door of professional football, respectfully.

To be clear, Kyler Murray cannot do it alone, he will need a good OL and running game, and a sound defense, but all of those are doable by the Cardinals, if given enough time to develop those parts of the team around Murray.



Remember, in order to survive and thrive, the Game MUST adapt to its athletes or it will suffer and/or perish.

Not only have the high school and college football coaches across the nation helped to usher in an overall more wide-open brand of football because they are often forced to innovate to compete - using the variable talent-levels of the players that appear on their rosters annually. But more importantly, the nuances and schemes of the game Must adapt to win the skilled athletes, and influence the hearts and minds of great players that are thoughtfully deciding whether or not to play the game of football.

Other shorter and/or "athletic" quarterbacks throughout pro football history have helped to lay the groundwork for Kyler Murray's success, and combined with the spread offenses and more protective rules of today helping to keep QB's a bit safer, it's a win-win.

Fran Tarkenton caused headaches for opposing defenses and went to 4 Super Bowls.



Drew Brees has Won a Super Bowl and has broken numerous passing records.



Michael Vick transformed the game at the professional level, even though he confessed to not studying film or game plans that much.



Doug Flutie was a fantastic player, but since most decision makers at that time in the NFL deemed him to small, he went to the old USFL first, then to the NFL and to the CFL, before finally returning to the NFL in the twilight of his dynamic career.



Russell Wilson is the closest comparison to Kyler Murray, from an athletic and pure passer standpoint, and Wilson's already earned a Super Bowl Championship, and was merely one-throw away from winning another.



Kyler Murray is going to have a very successful career in the NFL and the game will be changed forever in more ways than one.

The Future of Football Will Feature Versatile and Interchangeable Players

The greatest sport ever created is American Football.

And, one of the main reasons that football has prospered has been its unwavering ability to adapt and innovate to survive and thrive. Evolution is key and conceptual Revolution has been necessary at various points in the game's history.

In 2007 and 2008 when we created and utilized the A-11 Offense featuring fully-interchangeable players on offense, it not only opened-up the game like never before, but it offered a fantastic window into the future of football.



Employing Offensive and Defensive players that are entirely interchangeable with the ability to adapt and improvise in any situation, unleashes the game's creativity on every potential play.

Question: If you were going to create a new type of automobile, would you build it today with limited options and spartan features, or would you offer the most innovative designs and options possible?



For now, on the Offensive side of the ball, there are extreme restrictions regarding which players (based on jersey number) can become eligible to receive a forward pass and/or advance with the football on a given play, 36 options respectively.



However, by allowing the Offensive players to be fully-interchangeable (just like the defensive players) then the game's versatile offensive players' talents are maximized, and the creative options explode to 16,632 possibilities of which player can receive the snap and advance with the football, Even Though the offensive Formation Eligibility Rules remain the same.



The Game of football will become even faster and more complex, and the incredible athletes will push the limits of the game's future beyond anything that could have been imagined even 25 or 30-years ago.

It's time for the next big step forward in the evolution of football.

Cliff Branch Belongs in the Hall of Fame

UPDATED on February 22nd, 2022 - Yes! Cliff Branch has been selected to become a member of the Hall of Fame! Wonderful news...
In July 2015, and Six-months before the late, great, legendary Raider's QB, Kenny Stabler was Finally posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I (and along with many others) wrote that he deserved to be inducted into professional football's highest ring of honor.

Now, it is Way past time for the Voting Body of the Pro Football Hall of Fame to induct incredible former Raider's WR, Cliff Branch.



From 1972-1985, Cliff Branch was an outstanding Game Breaker that drove fear into the heart of Defensive Backs and the Defensive Coordinators that were charged with game-planning various ways to try and stop him.



Branch's Career Statistics are outstanding from an era of the NFL when it was Not a pass-happy league:

501 Receptions
8,685 Yards
17.3 Avg. Yards per Catch
67 Touchdowns

Branch was a Four-time All Pro and Pro Bowl Selection.

Branch also earned Three Super Bowl Rings, and Branch was a Pivotal player in the Raider's Super Bowl XVIII win vs. the Redskins in 1984. In that game, Branch caught a TD pass, and provided the late-stage, downfield block against the speedy Darrell Green that enabled Raider's Running Back, Marcus Allen to score on his amazing 74-yard run, a stunning play that many fans believe was the greatest single-play in Raider's history.

Respectfully, there are several Wide Receivers that have already been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, even though their career totals and amount of Super Bowl wins are Not equal to that of Branch's.

Lastly, Branch's excellent fellow teammate and wily Wide Receiving peer (Fred Biletnikoff) has been inducted into the Hall of Fame, and his career totals are virtually identical to Branch's, but Branch was able to earn two-more Super Bowl rings during his career than Freddy did, respectfully.

And now, without further adieu, it is well-past the time for the Voting Block of the Pro Football Hall of Fame to reconsider their prior decisions, and to induct Cliff Branch into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Taking Steps to Preserve the Game's Future

In our first-year of leading the Arroyo Dons High School Football Program, we are undergoing a major rebuilding process from the ground up, a complete overhaul.

The Dons have instituted a Strength and Conditioning program for the first time in Four-years, and equally important, the coaches, the team and the administration have taken steps to help improve player safety now, and to also help preserve the game's future.

Take a look at the nationwide outcry and emphasis about reducing concussions and how to improve player safety.

Respectfully the Arroyo Dons have done just that, by implementing a super-spread offensive system stemming from the A-11 Offense, and aligning the offensive players in athletic two-point stances in order to protect their heads, necks and brains more effectively.

For the Football Players at every level of the game, the Millions of Fans that Love the game, and also for the thousands of Football Coaches now and into the future, we must do our part to help the game make Progress and Grow into a much safer future.

We can do it by working together to ensure an improved game for generations to come...

A-11 Going Nationwide in Rookie Football

UPDATED on July 4th, 2018: The Pop Warner National Youth Football Organization announced it has joined forces with USA Football to expand its Rookie Tackle football league! Please see my earlier post below!

TEN-years ago in 2007, the football coaching staff and players at Piedmont High School (CA) took a very big chance and decided to try something radically different and new, by implementing the A-11 Offense featuring totally interchangeable players on Offense, eliminating the 3-point stance on the Line of Scrimmage, and using Two starting Quarterbacks in the backfield at the same time for the whole season.

Fortunately, in both seasons of utilizing the A-11 Offense in 2007 & 2008, the Piedmont football team did very well, and made the Playoffs each year.

More importantly, while No Offensive system is without its many flaws, the other Valuable benefits of the A-11 revealed itself, when over a two-year period in 2007 & 2008, Not One Piedmont Offensive Football Player suffered a serious injury.

Better yet, in 2008, Many high school football teams nationwide began using the A-11 Offense with excellent results, especially in terms of greatly improving player safety.




And, now Today, USA Football officially announced the launch of its ROOKIE Tackle football league nationwide pilot program with over 24,000 players, that features several Key components of the A-11 Game:

1. Fully Interchangeable Players on Offense

2. Eliminates the 3-point Stance

3. More Spacing between the players

Overall, this Major Announcement is a Game Changer forever, and it's a great thing for football players, coaches and fans!

Humbly, as the game of Tackle Football continues to evolve to become safer and much more dynamic, the Two-Quarterback, A-11 Offense unveiled at Piedmont in 2007 & 2008 demonstrated the incredible possibilities and put forth the groundwork for others to follow.

From Scientific American Magazine on the A-11 Offense in 2008:

“In a standard formation with five fixed linemen, a play can unfold with 36 different scenarios for who receives the snap, and who ends up with the ball…including a quarterback sneak…

In the A-11 Offense, because the receivers and linemen (and even the quarterbacks) are interchangeable, the number of different possibilities for what can happen on a given play Skyrockets to 16,632.”

Imagine what the game will look like in the year 2018 and beyond!

Thank You and a New Journey at Arroyo

When you are fortunate enough to coach football for 25-years at the High School and NCAA levels in northern California, the remarkable people that you encounter along the way create the strong foundation for the fun, sad, amazing, heartbreaking, thrilling and breathtaking moments that form the entire body of a football season or seasons.

During my coaching career at Chico State University, Chico High School, Piedmont High School, Menlo College, St. Mary's College, Livermore High School and Piedmont High School again...I have had the great pleasure of working with outstanding Student-Athletes, Coaches, Administrators and Staff, the Parents, and also Family and Friends.

I am incredibly Thankful for the relationships that we built and shared together, whether it was for a Reason, a Season or a Lifetime. We will always have the fond thoughts and great memories of those wonderful moments that we accomplished by planning and working together, and words cannot fully express how appreciative I am to have been a part of it.

Now, entering the 26th year of my coaching career and diving into my 1st year at Arroyo, I am humbled, honored and very grateful to the Arroyo Administration for the opportunity to lead the Dons football program.

I really look forward to working with the Arroyo Student-Athletes and my coaching staff, and the entire Arroyo Football Family to rebuild the Arroyo Dons Football program, and together we will make it a fun and exciting adventure!

Football's Future is at a Crossroads

Our Wonderful game of Football is at a Crossroads at this point in history. To be clear, it has happened before and we are in the vortex of it again now.

In more than 150-years of its evolution, the game of Football has soared to amazing heights, and it has suffered and prospered once again. All along the way, the game has adapted in order to thrive...most of the time those changes were voluntary, but sometimes the Game was Forced to change (in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt) and modernize some of its rules to improve player safety and push the game into a more mature and acceptable future.

Now, at this point in its incredible "life," the game's key indicators are pointing towards important adjustments to improve the rocky path of player safety that it's been riding on, which will help to increase the critically important youth and high school football participation numbers that serves as the lifeblood of Collegiate and Professional Football.

Looking back at the game of Football about 100-years ago, does that model of the game resemble the game that we play today?

No...and, things either get better or they get worse...they do not stay the same.

Morally, and with the advent of medical investigative technology that reveals the health and safety of the players in a real-time format during practices and games, combined with the fact that the athletes of today are bigger-faster-stronger than virtually every football player from 75-100 years ago...the leaders in charge of shaping the future of football at every level of play should answer these basic questions.

1. Is the game of football going to become Faster and more Spread Out overall, or will it become a more condensed, smash mouth game?



2. Are the Athletes of today and into the future going to become slower and weaker, or Stronger and Faster?


3. Will the Football Players of today and into the future be able to process real-time information on the field of play at a faster rate than their predecessors overall?




4. Can the Game's rules be modified to help improve player safety, and also help the game become even More exciting and complex than it already is right now?





Looking back and evaluating the changes that have taken place throughout football's history, one thing reveals itself over-and-over again, and that is...the game of Football has always adapted to its Athletes and adjusted to the particular set of circumstances affecting the game at that point in time.



For those of us that love the great game of Football, we need to keep experimenting and find the best methods and new rules to greatly improve player safety.
